The intersection of Myasnitskaya Street and the Boulevard Ring was an important centre of Moscow’s artistic life in both the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of the most remarkable events in the history of the Russian avant-garde and the unofficial art of the 1960s and 1970s took place here.

About the tour

The walk will follow addresses associated with avant-garde and nonconformist artists and conclude on Maroseyka, in historic late-17th-century chambers that recently became home to the AZ/ART Center for Contemporary Art.

During the tour, you will discover:
  • where Alexander Rodchenko took his famous photographs “on the diagonal”;
  • how Ilya Kabakov obtained a studio on the roof of “the most beautiful building in Moscow”;
  • where Vladimir Mayakovsky created posters for the ROSTA Windows;
  • where and with whom Kazimir Malevich studied painting;
  • what Viktor Pivovarov called sacred Moscow;
  • and many other fascinating facts.
