Concert No. 5 “Solitude, Alone with Everyone”

The AZ/ART Center for Contemporary Art, together with the Nikolai Karetnikov Foundation, launches a music programme accompanying the exhibition “Anya Zholud. Not the Horizon.” In this unique series of chamber music concerts, Sergey Terentyev, author and curator of the concert programmes, creates a dialogue with Anya Zholud’s artistic strategies, worldview, and the various installations presented in the exhibition.

The image of the road and the journey, the lifeline of Anya Zholud — the “wrong artist” — and the line of the “wrong horizon” have much in common with the linear unfolding of musical monody. The theme of being “alone with everyone” emerges distinctly in many of Anya Zholud’s works and runs like a red thread through virtually her entire artistic journey. This theme resonates just as poignantly in the works of many composers of the second half of the 20th and the first quarter of the 21st century.

This concert programme consists of solo pieces that form a horizon line of their own. Each work is a monologue-confession in which we hear different registers of the solitary human voice — from sotto voce to fleeting surges of expression.
